Albert K. Barume, the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples (SRIP), presented his report on the sexual and reproductive health and rights of Indigenous women and girls to the Human Rights Council for its 63rd session on September 7 to October 9, 2026.

In his report, the SRIP highlighted the historical and contemporary forms of violations against the sexual and reproductive health and rights of Indigenous women and girls around the world. These include violations during the period when settlers came in and colonial States were established in Indigenous territories.

The report also focuses on the harmful cultural practices and beliefs as well as conflict militarization and organized crime as root causes of violations of the sexual and reproductive and rights of Indigenous women and girls. Contemporary forms of violations that contribute to structural discrimination and environmental contamination are elucidated with data.

His report also shows how States responded to the violations of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of Indigenous women and girls. It notes emerging good practices to address historical and contemporary violations.

In conclusion, the report stressed that, “Protecting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of Indigenous women requires the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ rights to self-determination, lands, territories and resources, the meaningful participation of Indigenous women in all decision-making processes that affect them, respect for Indigenous knowledge systems and sustained efforts to eliminate the discrimination, violence and inequalities that continue to threaten Indigenous women and girls, their communities and future generations”.

The report has also drawn several recommendations for States to consider and implement.
